Poetry Moment Paul Laurence Dunbar

Poetry was a part of my self-discovery and cultural appreciation from a very young age.  When I was younger i searched for Black poets and stumbled onto the name Paul Laurence Dunbar.  Although Dunbar is best know for his Black dialectic verses; he was also authored novels, short stories and poetry without this theme that has been largely overlooked… Enjoy one of my favorite poems by Dunbar The Sum A little dreaming by the way, A little toiling day by day; A little pain, a little strife, A little joy,–and that is life. A little short-lived summer’s morn, When joy … Continue reading Poetry Moment Paul Laurence Dunbar

Poetry Moment: Maya Angelou

It was not poetry that brought me to Maya Angelou.  I was 13 or 14 when I happened upon a book that title instantly peeked my interest.  This book was “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.”  This autobiography was Maya’s coming of age story that took you from her early childhood to becoming a teen mother.  It still remains on my must read for women…Please Enjoy her poem that shares its name with one of my favorite books! I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings The free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till … Continue reading Poetry Moment: Maya Angelou

Poetry Moment: Pablo Neruda

The first time I read Pablo’s work; I was addicted.  I would read and reread his poetry as if it was written only for me.  He is a poetic genius.  Please enjoy one of my favorites poems… If You Forget Me I want you to know one thing. You know how this is: if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window, if I touch near the fire the impalpable ash or the wrinkled body of the log, everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were … Continue reading Poetry Moment: Pablo Neruda

A Pearl

Much too young to understand Pain came in my life and held my hand It hurt so much I pulled away But every day became night I was living in what felt like a serious fight.   I logged this pain deep inside. My memories became the standard lie “I’m fine” But anger grew and I called it; “strength” Still much too young to understand Pain became anger now they both held my hand. But the days became night Ruled by my anger; I felt now I had the upper hand. At least that’s how I stayed in the fight. … Continue reading A Pearl

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”: Gospel of Luke 23:46 Only my Father can redeem. I have been found guilty by man But where I am going their judgment Has no weight. You celebrate my death as if it is not life I take my place on the throne I am going home This great love I’ve proven; I’ve shown. “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” Supportive scriptures Psalm 31:5 (1 Corinthians 5:7) (Luke 23:47) (Romans 3:24-25) (John 15:13) Hebrews … Continue reading Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”

When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished”; and he bowed his head and handed over the spirit.

When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished”; and he bowed his head and handed over the spirit. Gospel of John 19:30 It is tough to imagine the pain I have bared The lives I will save will be worth all the pain I promise to stay with you from now to the end But my job here is complete. I have lived as man to carry your sin My time here as man has come to its end. Back with my father; I must go. “It is Finished.” My suffering is over and my purpose fulfilled … Continue reading When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished”; and he bowed his head and handed over the spirit.

“I thirst”

“I thirst” Gospel of John 19:28 I spoke of drinking of the cup And how I must bear the cross I know this moment I must fulfill The wounds inflicted upon me in the tormenting, the crowning of my head with thorns, and the nailing upon the cross are now taking their toll, after losing this much blood from not just hanging but after the hours I walked I am offered vinegar to numb this physical thirst But capture this thought for a moment I have now seen and bared each of your pain And your souls are heavy from … Continue reading “I thirst”
