Asking Sunshine: Waiting to Be Married

Asking Sunshine… Hi Sunshine! I have been seeing the same guy since my junior year in college and we are now almost 30. I want to start a family once we are married, but the last 5 years he has said “next year, my question is how do I get him to understand time is ticking or should I just wait? Dear Waiting To Be Married.. If I give it to you straight, then a few sentences in you may be upset with me because I’m not giving you the answer you expect.  I say this because every situation is … Continue reading Asking Sunshine: Waiting to Be Married

Poetry Moment Paul Laurence Dunbar

Poetry was a part of my self-discovery and cultural appreciation from a very young age.  When I was younger i searched for Black poets and stumbled onto the name Paul Laurence Dunbar.  Although Dunbar is best know for his Black dialectic verses; he was also authored novels, short stories and poetry without this theme that has been largely overlooked… Enjoy one of my favorite poems by Dunbar The Sum A little dreaming by the way, A little toiling day by day; A little pain, a little strife, A little joy,–and that is life. A little short-lived summer’s morn, When joy … Continue reading Poetry Moment Paul Laurence Dunbar

Asking Sunshine: Married with Children

Asking Sunshine I have been married for almost 10 years; for the first 5-6 years of my marriage it was just my husband and I.  We are both extremely busy professional people; yet we always found time for date night, spending time with our separate friends, travelling and just really enjoying life. Fast forward to current day our lives have totally changed; we are the parents of two small children (2 ½ and 4). When they were younger, adjusting to them felt natural, but now it is causing strain in our marriage.  My husband has not complained openly but I … Continue reading Asking Sunshine: Married with Children

Asking Sunshine: Dating While Friends

Asking Sunshine I have had an on-again, off-again kind of relationship with a guy for about three years. Recently, we have tried to really make it work for real this time, but the results are an interesting mix of chaos and harmony, with the chaos being explosive arguments, digs under the belt, and me trying hard to be better FOR him. My spirit is LOUD in telling me we’re not for each other, but there is so much history there, and I love him at the very least as a close friend. How can I get over this ideal of … Continue reading Asking Sunshine: Dating While Friends

Poetry Moment: Pablo Neruda

The first time I read Pablo’s work; I was addicted.  I would read and reread his poetry as if it was written only for me.  He is a poetic genius.  Please enjoy one of my favorites poems… If You Forget Me I want you to know one thing. You know how this is: if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window, if I touch near the fire the impalpable ash or the wrinkled body of the log, everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were … Continue reading Poetry Moment: Pablo Neruda

Asking Sunshine: Distant Daughter

Asking Sunshine  Because of how life has moved for both of us, and timing of my early educational pursuits in the midst of my parents’ divorce, I have a much distanced relationship with my father. Long story short, we keep in touch, but there is no REAL relationship there. I love him very much, but it’s always extremely uncomfortable trying to talk with him. We are literally just alike, so I understand him more than he knows, but sometimes it feels like there’s a gaping wound in our relationship that no one is willing to approach, so it will always be … Continue reading Asking Sunshine: Distant Daughter
